Description Essay: Water, Essay Example

Essay

Water is one of the most valuable resources we have. It is essential to all life on earth, and will cause tremendous suffering in its absence. However, that is not all. Water, in all its glory, is also one of our most beautiful resources, and grants life to every living thing on earth. Whichever sense is engaged, water nourishes the core of who we are. The delightfully refreshing taste of cold, clean water from a pristine mountain stream can be ultimately satisfying, more so than any other drink on earth. The earthy smell of water reminds us that we are dynamically connected to the living world around us. To rest by a stream of gently flowing water, while its musical burbling soothes the mind, can be a wonderfully relaxing way to spend an afternoon as well.

There have been times when I’ve found myself in just this situation, resting at the edge of  rippling brook. I remember dipping my hands in that cool, clear water and watching the droplets fall through my fingers, sunlight igniting the drops like fiery specks of crystal. I remember looking up to the more swiftly moving current, and gazing at the rapid evolution of water tumbling down the worn rock face. I recall poking my head through a curtain of brambles, just to see water seeping, as if by magic, out of a hidden spring.

Water – it is beautiful, it is essential, and it is full of promise. It permeates the essence of who we are. It is within us and it is without us, and without it, we cannot survive. We are graced by its loveliness, as we are graced by its value – for without it we are nothing, have nothing, and would cease to exist. How fortunate we are to have a resource so precious, so nourishing, and yet so dazzling to the senses.
