Identify the artistic period or movement from Image 1-Painting: Gardner’s Art through the Ages: The Western Perspective Vol. II depicts art from the Western movement. Western arts are depicted primarily from European countries and come from the history of ancient Middle East, Egyptian and Aegean civilizations. This type of art was influenced by the Classical Period of Art and moved to the Medieval Period of art. The Renaissance period eventually re-emerged which led to the Baroque period.
Cite the specific elements that have led you to your conclusion.
Depictions of frontiers, cowboys, stagecoaches and the miles of railroads led me to the conclusion that this artistic period or movement was from the Western Era.
Use one piece seen in class that is similar to the piece you have chosen.
The Entombment is one of the classical treasures of the Vatican. It gives a message that Christ has come to Earth and mankind has reconciled with the heavens. Though the painting is not the exact same as Gardner’s it gives a realistic vision as the same.
I have chosen “The Entombment” by Caravaggio.
Choose a known piece and an unknown piece and discuss the similarities. How did you come to classify the unknown piece by virtue of composition, meaning or representation?
Chinese Cherry Blossom Feng and Neutral Radiance are the two paintings that I wish to compare. The composition is full of curved lines and lovely flowers in Chinese Cherry Blossom Feng where Neutral Radiance is full of straight lines and fine definition. They both represent serenity and calmness. I came to this reasoning through the use of strokes, light and the overall feeling the paintings portray to me.
Why did you select the known piece to compare to the unknown piece?
I selected the known piece by Feng because it was simply a vision of beauty full of simplicity to be explained in natural lighting with a hint of use of curved stroking that any artist could appreciate. I chose the ‘unknown author’ painting because it portrayed a simple window with a book ajar the window which portrayed the use of linear lines and simple strokes which depicted simple beauty.
Lecture about the culture, religion and history of the period.
The culture, religion and history of the Western Art Period were full of social norms, principles and normal religious beliefs. Roman Classical and Renaissance influence was very strong during that period. There was literary, scientific and political influence as well on the art of that period. Human rights and equality were strongly influenced by the culture and religious values of the period.
I saw a vision of a painting full of vision, movement and use of dull and vivid color. The use of people was essential to the painting in order to depict the movement of civilization through the various eras during that time. The painting has a normal yet traditional view. The use of lines and colors created an illustration of the true reality during the Western Art Era. Motion was given to the people through use of curved lineage and differentiation of colors. Red, orange and yellow were used to create the warm sensation of the background to the picture while pure red was used to give the picture a hint of fire and passion. Green, blue and purple was used to accentuate the coolness of the sky and to create the cool mood of the background. Green was used in the pasture areas to create a tranquil feeling to the painting. When we combine colors we do so to alter the emotional quality we hope to accomplish as seen by many great painters such as Van Gogh, Renault and others. Colors can further be used to create a harmonious feel or sensation to the overall sensation of the painting. Texture was used to create a faux background in the picture near the back end of the painting. Texture was used to essentially add to the entire depth of the artwork presented.
