A database is a collection of data organized in a relevant way with the intention of showing the information that is required to illustrate. The data in the database can be edited, retrieved and deleted by the administrator. They store and retrieve information which in return is saved in rows that form records (Ullman, 1997). Data refers to facts and a long chain of data form a database. From the chains of data, we form a database management system, which is software that serves as an intermediary between the end users and the database.
In scenario 1
We need to create simple software that will be recording all the equipments in an electronic company. In this software, you need to design a page with labels containing names of the equipments, shippers, and shipment. You also need textboxes where the specific names of the equipments will be entered and don’t forget a save or submit button which will be sending the recorded date to the database. The database will have a table by the name booth components and this table will have the following fields; equipment, shippers, and shipment which are the same textboxes on the design page. The administrator gives rights to all the users and so these rights apply when the user is logging into the system and accessing data for an external system.
There are different relationships that can be put in place. They include:-
- One-to-many relationship
This refers to a scenario where one party performs different tasks. This is backed up by the idea that the marketing assistant is responsible for meeting the consumer electronic supervisors and also ensuring that all the set up are done as well as the shipping of the equipment.
- One-to-one relationship
This refers to a scenario where a single party is involved in a particular task and it is only dedicated to that particular party and personnel. The scenario happens that the assistant manager is responsible for supervising the packing and the transportation of the items back to the store.
A database system would work more efficient as compared to an excel system. This is backed by the fact that the database has the following advantages:-
- Minimal or no data redundancy
- Enhances more consistency
- Data integrity is increased as well as ensuring more data security
- Gives a centralized control as well as creating ease in sharing data
- Helps reduce cost incurred in entry, storage and retrieval of data.
- It is secure and no other extra measures required for security purposes
However, as very much as one would like to adopt a database system, it also comes along with its shortcomings which include:-
- They take a lot of time to develop and implement
- High costs regarding hardware, software and training of end users.
An enterprise database is the best because data is not moved between systems an there is elimination of validation of transfer, it is easy to access data from a file system in a wide area network, and they protect the data with a password. So there is no issue of insecurity because you are the only person who can access the system (Dang, 2008). The administrator gives rights to all the users and so these rights apply when the user is logging into the system and accessing data for an external system. A decision support system (DSS) would be very helpful because it’s a support system that helps organizations and companies in planning and decision making process. Decision support system relies mostly on the data that is already in the database and according to that it helps the management in decision making (Bachmann, 2007).
In scenario 2
The company needs a Local area network (LAN). This is because a local area network has the implication of type of network that covers a limited geographical section such as the case of a home or an office. Wide area network on the other hand implies to the type of network the covers a small geographical area like the Internet, it covers the globe. Another reason why the company should use LAN is because it has high data transfer rates than WAN, which has a low data transfer rate.
The company requires internet. It can be wireless or 3G. This is because the internet is a source of knowledge and information. The company does not need to use Virtual Private Network (VPN) for security because what VPN does is to extend a private network across other public networks. Virtual Private Network allows employees to access the intranet of their firm from anywhere including home, office or when they are traveling so this means that at the moment the company will not require any one of that kind.
