Original Article: Metabolism
The purpose of this article was to conduct a longitudinal study to determine the relation between childhood body mass index (BMI) and the later chances of contracting Type I Diabetes. Methods used were self-reporting and Cox proportional hazard methods were used to the relation of the growth in the children. The results found that 61% of the children analyzed reported Diabetes I by the age of 30. The conclusion is that higher BMI in childhood years did in fact increase the risk of Diabetes I later in life. Further a reduction of childhood obesity may reduce the risk of later contracting Type I Diabetes. There needs to be a medium to prevent obesity in order to lower the chances of contracting the Type I Diabetes. The children must change their diets and those with especially high genetic risks must take extra precautions such as adding regular activity and exercise to their daily regimen.
Childhood Obesity and Metabolic Printing
The purpose of this study is to relate the correlation, if any of maternal glycemia in pregnancy to obesity risks in children. Universal gestational diabetes mellitus screening (GDM) was conducted in the Northwestern states and Hawaii. Measured offspring weight was portrayed five to seven years later to determine sex specific weight for age percentiles. The results showed there a very positive direction that children would have an increased chance for childhood obesity after looking at the five to seven year criteria.
Childhood obesity complicating the differential diagnosis of maturity-onset diabetes of the Young and type 2 diabetes
Child obesity has been associated with Type II diabetes. Over the last thirty years there has been a dramatic increase in the disease especially with Type I diabetes. The young patients have accounted for the increase of the newly diagnosed patients. The setting for the experiment was the tertiary university hospital. A nearly fourteen year old boy was the subject of the test. His mother and father had diabetes and grandmother was obese. The proband showed there was elevated C-peptide level and was negative for Beta-Cell antibodies. The genetic analysis for MOYD showed the family members were all affected. Hence in conclusion, the patient tested had some correlation to what his mother had and some contribution levels to Type II diabetes, secondary.
Forecasting the Future Economic Burden of Current Adolescent Overweight: An Estimate of the Coronary Heart Disease Policy Model
The purpose of this study was to try to predict the future economic burden of overweight adolescents. Models were assimilated to simulate the future economic financial burden of overweight adolescents associated with heart disease from the age group of 35-64 for the years 2020 to 2050. “The cumulative excess attributable total costs are estimated at $254 billion: $208
billion because of lost productivity from earlier death or morbidity and $46billion from direct medical costs.” (Lightwood, 2009). There will be lost productivity mainly from premature death and disability attributed to the current adolescent overweight problem. This premature death and disability can be prevented by changes in diet and a conducive look into daily exercise regiments of adolescents.
Student Nurses Participate in Public Health Research and Practice through a School-Based Screening Program
Minority children are at high risk for obesity, hypertension and diabetes. Rates are at their highest at three times the risk since 1970. African and Hispanic children have been at the highest risk of all children researched. Genetic and lifestyle factors has attributed to these results and the triple increase since 1970. Results show children who are obese are at very high risk for metabolic and cardiovascular problems and are at high risks for Type II diabetes and hypertension. It is critical that nurses play a leading role in helping to prevent these problems. They can help to screen for diseases and help people to choose the right lifestyles to conform to lower obesity rates. The universities can also contribute to the aid of the children and adolescents. They can instead of looking into pure educational goals for youngsters, promote healthier lifestyles.
