Difficulty Writing Research Papers, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 301

Essay

Writing a research paper seems easy, pick a topic, research and then just put your thoughts onto paper. Getting started for me isn’t the hard part, I can find something to write about and even research it without too much difficulty. The problem that I have come across in the past is that my topic is too general. Being such a broad topic makes it hard to keep the paper focused and on topic. Instead I have trouble narrowing it down and finding a way to make each paragraph specific enough to answer the question.

Narrowing Down A Topic

I wrote a history paper in the past and instead of asking a specific question I tried to write the paper on a broad area of history. That didn’t work because instead of answering a specific question or focusing on one topic, it was too broad. The paper did not come out like I planned and it had too many issues written because I was trying to cover the entire event. That is a mistake and sometimes hard for me when trying to write a paper. That also causes trouble in developing a thesis sentence. Because it is hard to cover and write everything that you’re trying to say in one sentence when it is too broad.

Focusing The Paper

I have learned that in order to focus the paper that you must really be sure of the area that you want to write about. If I am going to write another history paper I will choose a broad area and then narrow it down to a specific time frame, event or area, instead of covering something too broad. Another way to make sure that the paper is a little easier is to do the research in an area of interest and then decide the specifics.
