Diminishing Returns, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 275

Essay

In economics, the law of diminishing returns states that increasing a single factor of production while holding others constant will result in a lower number of returns per unit (Samuelson et al.110). While this concept applies to the business world, it is also applicable to the life of a student. Ultimately, it is essential to consider that in some cases, putting in too much work will result in a smaller amount of information learned. It is therefore necessary for each student to determine where their point of diminishing returns lies to be sure that studying is done efficiently and that possible free time is not wasted.

It is obvious that a student is at a point of diminishing returns when they are reading the same information repeatedly without understanding it or comprehending the words on the paper. Furthermore, this occurs when a student studies the same fact too much, even though he or she believes that it has already been learned. To avoid this from occurring, it is helpful to study over long periods of time to ensure that the mind is well refreshed. In addition, doing so will allow students to gain a greater understanding of what they already know versus what they still need to study.

When determining how much study time is enough, it is important to consider how much information can actually be learned in a study session. This requires determining how much study is too little and too much. Each student must find a perfect balance to ensure that time is used efficiently. Ultimately, this is the key to achieving a successful education.
