| Emergency Alert System

The National Weather service for N. Palm Beach Florida provides advance forecast information relative to the weather systems and hurricane threats in the area. (National Weather Service, 2012). There are several emergency alert stations throughout the county that provide information in the event of a pending hurricane threat.

| Local Preparedness

A severe tropical cyclone with wind speeds in excess of 74 mph can create a formidable amount of damage in its wake. As they move ashore, they bring high winds, tornadoes, torrential rains, and flooding. FEMA is responsible for helping to co-ordinate local activities in terms of mitigation activities and local preparedness “FEMA’s Federal Insurance and Mitigation Administration (FIMA) manages the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and implements a variety of programs authorized by Congress to reduce losses that may result from natural disasters” (FEMA, 2012)

| First Aid and Volunteers

There are numerous centres to co-ordinate the provision of first aid, shelter and how to develop emergency kits as part of an overall preparedness strategy. There are numerous volunteer groups that assist in provision of information and the planning of community events that cover rehearsals and instruction on the procedures to follow. This equally covers the procedure for orderly evacuation in the threat of a potentially lethal hurricane.
