Introduction
Nurse Practitioners (NPs) offer a wide range of expert clinical services to patients across a number of primary care and specialty areas. The Doctor of Nurse Practitioner Program (DNP) prepares students to achieve great success in this field that continues to grow and thrive as part of a complex healthcare system. As a DNP student, advancing the nursing field is a primary objective and provides a significant level of attention and support to patients in need of high quality care and treatment. DNP students also strive to support their fellow nurses in order to accomplish a set of critical objectives that support such areas as primary care and the prevention of chronic illness.
Analysis
DNP students prepare for a number of roles and responsibilities in a clinical capacity, including conducting physical examinations and screenings, establishing diagnoses for a variety of conditions, prescribing medications, and treating chronic illnesses. Each of these areas requires a level of advanced knowledge, as well as the practical experience that is necessary to work well with patients. It is expected that NPs work under the close supervision of their employing physicians, yet also work independently in a manner that goes above and beyond that of the traditional Registered Nurse (RN).
As part of the DNP academic and training program, the prescribing capabilities of NPs must be considered as essential to their growth and development in the healthcare field. This role eases the burden assumed by physicians in prescribing medications, which saves the patient time and promotes greater efficiency in the clinical setting. In addition, NPs often act as counselors in providing patients with much needed guidance and support in addressing health concerns and other issues. It is important for NPs to demonstrate compassion and understanding when diagnosing and treating patients so that the burden of illness or disease is alleviated to some degree.
DNP students prepare for a number of roles and responsibilities that occur without the direct supervision of a physician, and they do not assume the burden of malpractice and other judgments that physicians must bear. Therefore, this role is often desirable for many healthcare professionals and nurses who seek to advance their knowledge and understanding of the field and reap many rewards in the process. DNP students must demonstrate effective communication skills and the continued development of new strategies that will facilitate their cooperation with physicians, other healthcare professionals, and with established clinical guidelines.
Conclusion
Nurse Practitioners offer many valuable services in the areas of direct patient care and clinical guidance. These professionals require an advanced level of education and must continue to expand their knowledge in real-world practice settings. It is important for this group of professionals to receive the recognition that they deserve because they offer a unique perspective to patients in regards to a variety of diagnoses and treatments to manage many health conditions. Upon graduation, NPs must continue to make their presence and their voices known within the healthcare profession because their experience and contributions are vital to healthcare practice on many different levels. Furthermore, this group of advanced practice nursing students possess the ability to identify possible solutions to common problems and to develop more efficient methods of managing illness to promote greater health and wellbeing through their expanded training and guidance. Therefore, DNP students should be evaluated for their prospective contributions to healthcare practice because they provide invaluable knowledge, expertise, and guidance, sound and reasonable judgment, ethical responsibility, and positive clinical outcomes for many patients. Their training is critical in order to achieve success in an advanced practice capacity.
