Do You Agree With Bobby’s Request for the Second Meeting, Essay Example

Pages: 2

Words: 674

Essay

Bobby’s request for second meeting is the right call. Delaying the second meeting will result in negative consequences for Shirley and Jeannie as well as the organization. Shirley has proven herself to be a dedicated employee of the organization. She is the winner of the “territory manager of the year award” that proves she is a valuable asset to the organization. Shirley regularly communicates her progress to her colleagues though she is not every effective at managing criticism. Shirley does have emotional issues and may take professional criticism as a personal criticism as is evident in her response to criticism by Jeannie.

Like Shirley, Jeannie’s commitment to the organization is also unquestionable and she puts a great emphasis on tight budget management. Shirley’s goal is to effectively manage costs in order to be able to operate within weekly and monthly budgets so that her team could receive a quarterly and annual bonus. When Shirley became the manager of her territory, she broke down under the guilt of not being able to perform her duty as well as she would have desired.

Even though both Shirley and Jeannie are committed employees and desire to remain with the firm, unless they are able to find out a way to work with each other, the tension would affect their abilities to perform well. Jeannie took a logical step by approaching the vice-president to arrange a meeting with Shirley so that they can sort out their differences in a constructive manner but this has resulted in Shirley further isolating herself. If the second meeting doesn’t take place, it may further reduce Shirley’s attention and interest in her work responsibilities and increase the tendency of engaging in time passing activities such as cyber-loafing, socializing, and moonlighting etc. The end result would be her missing meetings, taking long breaks, showing high rates of absenteeism, and low motivation levels. It may even lead to destructive behaviors by both Shirley and Jeannie such as production deviance (wasting resources, substance abuse), political deviance (gossiping, incivility) and property deviance (sabotage, theft).

If this situation doesn’t get fixed through the second meeting, both Jeannie (who has to cope with temperamental personalities of medical service providers) and Shirley (who often has to liaise with irritable vendors) may also be less effective at their work tasks that already places huge mental stress son both of them. The personal stress may boil over to work related tasks, resulting in emotional bursts and loss of patience against the customers on whom the organization depends for its business. The stress may also shape their dealings with the subordinates. There is a lot at stake for the organization because both Shirley and Jeannie are one of the most productive employees in the HR department and have been working with the company for over five years. Their absence will leave a huge talent gap.

This situation is the outcome of Jeannie’s intense emotions (anxiety and anger) toward her new territory manager. She complained that Shirley’s lack of support as a territory manager is affecting her ability to do her job properly. Shirley took these comments at heart and met with Bobby. Teary-eyed Shirley claimed it was Jeannie’s fault and she had nothing to do with this situation. It is obvious there is a growing rift between Shirley and Jeannie. These differences grow more serious over time thus, it is a wise act to deal with these work conflicts in a timely manner. A second meeting should be called as soon as possible to mend the conflict between Shirley and Jeannie.

This will be a good opportunity for Kelly to find out if Shirley and Jeannie have what it takes to sort out personal differences in the best interests of the company. This will also be a good predictor of their future behavior. In addition, Kelly may also offer mentoring and coaching services to Shirley and Jeannie as she sees fit. If Shirley and Jeannie are not about to sort out their differences, this may hint at their need to improve their working skills in a team environment.
