Domestication, Essay Example

Words: 331

Essay

Animals have been domesticated in a selective manner in consideration of the valuable tasks and the contribution to the general well being of man that the animal is in a position to render. This is the reason why some animals qualified for domestication while others did not. The implication of domestication surpasses the process of taming according to the suggestion made by Darwin since it incorporates the breeding  of the animals in custody oriented to a specific goal and may not necessarily call for mans conscious efforts. It is responsible for an increase in fecundity and may also lead to the introduction of specific organs of the body leading to the achievement of a high plasticity in the case of the animals which is facilitated by man subjugation. The process of domestication results in a symbiotic relationship and the animal intended for domestication should qualify in this respect. Their attributes should be resources that man is in a position of utilizing for economic benefit (Price 1-32).

Another intention for the domestication of the animals may be hybridization in the assessment of the genetic basis. The number of the animal species under domestication is relatively low due to the lack of the provision of an environment that is captive for the sake of the achievement of the least amount of necessities to achieve successful reproduction. The number of the species so far exploited are relatively few for convenience as well as economical with respect to their breeding and their maintenance in their custody (Price 1-32).

Other issues of consideration include some behavioral traits that are responsible for the facilitation of the process of domestication. These include the resistance to the inbreeding effects that are detrimental (Price 1-32). Majority of the traits in this category facilitate efficiency animals exploitation by the humans in the context of economic as well as ecological conditions
