Downsides of Globalization, Essay Example

Pages: 2

Words: 516

Essay

Globalization has facilitated the efficient movement of individuals from one economic zone to another. Through innovative applications, the practices have transformed the daily practices of individuals related to communication. However, it is worth noting that the current trend depicts significant downsides in terms of demerits associated with social media platforms. For instance, globalization has allowed individuals to orchestrate criminal activities, as evidenced in major countries like Nigeria, Colombia, and Myanmar (White 5). It is through the online connection of individuals that criminal activities have increased during the ongoing pandemic. Most fundamentally, globalization has interfered with the cultural beliefs of many communities which aim at assimilating foreign traditions.

In addition, globalization practice has affected the privacy of individuals across online media networks. For instance, frequent Instagram and WhatsApp users share their unique content via pictures, videos, and audio clips (Asamoah 10). The most important details of these items reveal essential personal details of an individual, including email account and physical address. These are critical data attributes that can facilitate the breaching of privacy status associated with users. This is a critical downside as it facilitates the manipulation of data for pre-determined interests. For example, the details obtained through file attributes can facilitate cybercrime associated with online financial money laundering.

Furthermore, globalization has resulted in high insecurity cases, which affect the national security of countries. This is common in countries that experience political and military conflicts and engage in international activities that disrupt peace. For instance, through globalizing military alliances, some regions have depicted immense tension affecting the lives of ordinary individuals (Salminen et al. 15). This has been evidenced in countries that face the threat of foreign invasion due to unwanted practices by those in power. Most critically, globalization has facilitated the interconnection of individuals located in remote regions worldwide. The practice has, nonetheless, failed to achieve humanitarian basics associated with low poverty levels.

It is objective to acknowledge that globalization has resulted in unfair business competition in favor of specific monopolies. This is common in American-owned companies, which have advanced to industry leaders due to high innovation. In essence, this is evidenced in social media platforms owned by Facebook, Yahoo, and Google, which are headquartered in the U.S. (Al Khaja et al., 348). This has reduced the opportunities for small businesses to grow, as evidenced in the ongoing trust hearings. Through globalization, these companies have become monopolies by engaging in unfair business practices of purchasing small firms.
