  1. A traditional port city. There was low grade fishing and trading with very little industry and development. The city is in a desert setting and traditionally had a very low population that was conservative economically and in general.
  2. They realized that due to their relative lack of oil compared to neighboring regions, it was important for Dubai to take advantage of the industry oil would create. Dubai used import substitution and invested in startup industries until they were large sources of growth.
  3. The primary workers in Dubai are foreigners who are brought in largely from India and Pakistan as well as nearly every country. Natives very rarely work and are heavily subsidized by the government. The labor force is attracted from foreign countries into the city with larger wages than they would otherwise receive.
  4. Dubai is the financial and industrial center of a region containing vast and valuable natural resources. However, it is completely dependent on the global aggregate demand, especially for petroleum. The recent recession has left its economy struggling. Now it has a large contingent of foreign dissatisfied workers. Finally, its society has huge amounts of inequality economically.
  5. They have each taken in mass influxes of immigrant workers throughout their history. Today, Dubai is very much like a traditional western city and is a financial city like London or Paris. Its architecture has occasional nods to the Middle East setting, but largely it has developed into series of high rise buildings for commercial and residential uses. Each also uses great deals of energy, especially Dubai which is centered in the dessert, an unusual place for a city of its size.
  6. The features of Dubai celebrated in the video are numerous. Included are the fantastic amounts of wealth built in the infrastructure of the city. On top of that, the growing financial importance and its status as the capital of the Middle East. The video also mentions other features such as the numerous horse races and things of this nature throughout the city. Reasons given for the success of Dubai include the billions of people surround it and its status as the halfway point between other financial capitals Dubai and London.
  7. Dubai wanted to become a large city that would be the most prominent in the region in many different ways. They did this by bringing in companies through any method it took, such as subsidies or more indirect methods like free trade zones, infrastructure, or favorable business conditions. The goal of the current Sheikh is for the city to eventually become the best in the world in every facet, listing higher education and healthcare as examples of where he wanted to thrive.
  8. The recently developed islands on the coastline of Dubai feature almost no residents in most cases. Their development into these artificial islands shows how much money gets put into Dubai without good reason. Other problems include prostitution, largely through involuntary human trafficking. Political dissent is also squashed, with little protection for freedom of speech.
