Earning an MBA Degree, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 391

Essay

Just the other day, I was told by a former professor that is a close friend of mine that students should not seek a Masters Degree to avoid the economy or to get a job.  Today, I am currently a regional manager of a dental office chain that maintains over a $10 million annual budget.  I have grown with this company and have been promoted from within numerous times to obtain the position I now hold.  Still, this does not satisfy my career desires or goals.  I know that in order for me to achieve what I have always dreamed, I will need to enter this Masters Degree program to obtain my MBA.

Besides earning an MBA degree, I mainly wish to gain a larger set of skills than what I have been able to obtain thus far.  One of my most difficult struggles comes from the lack of experience that I have in properly negotiating with clients or co-workers and communicating the goals of the organization.  I have never been afraid to pick up the phone and talk, but I lack the skills necessary to continue to advance in a sales-driven environment.  My managerial skills must improve in order to provide organization and structure to my current position.  In addition, I greatly wish to advance into the investment industry and work as an investment banker on Wall Street.  I am not naïve enough to believe that this is an easily achievable goal.  Clearly, hard work and dedication are crucial components to earning such a position, which is why I greatly desire to enter into this MBA program.

Finally, my professional career would not be where it is today without understanding that people are very important.  Sure, clients are people and they are important; however, building relationships and connecting with people have helped build my professional career into a small success story.  I was recommended to my current position by a former supervisor, and I know that I need to continue to meet new people and gain additional reference resources from professionals that have been there, made mistakes, and can help me learn.  I greatly wish to find a mentor in the MBA program that can help educate me and guide me through the steps to achieving my career goals and one day finding that shining star that leads me to Wall Street.
