Ecole Hotelier de Lausanne, Essay Example

Essay

As an avid explorer and traveler, I have a first-hand appreciation of the necessity of good hospitality.  The warm and wonderful places that are in my memories function as an inspiration to provide this service to others.  Ecole Hotelier de Lausanne’s (EHL) reputation for excellence in the hospitality and catering industry led me to attend their Summer Academy in 2015.  My time at EHL made me realize that this school would take my talent and passions and guide me to an enjoyable career in the hospitality and catering industry.  The strong sense of community present at EHL nurtures students and allows them to flourish, while at the same time, producing top-of-the-line professionals.

After attending EHL’s Summer Academy in 2015, I was impressed with both the school and the amount of material that I learned within only one week.  The workshops exposed me to the different opportunities in the field of hospitality and catering.  I felt that the instruction on leadership and teamwork showed us how to think like a five-star hotel manager.  Because I love food, one of my favorite activities was the day that I was allowed to become a chef.  My week at EHL exposed me to the basic operational issues in managing a hotel such as housekeeping and room service.   In addition to basic operational skills, we learned critical analysis and problem-solving skills.  The Summer Academy showed us how to identify the major trends in hospitality and how we can stay up-to-date in our field.  I truly feel that EHL provides its students with a mindset for success and shows them how to train their “critical eye for excellence” and how to put them into practice on a daily basis.

The Summer Academy showed me directly EHL’s strong sense of community.  The faculty and the students were so supportive of one another, and EHL seemed that it was a place whose goal was to foster an appreciation for the hospitality and catering industry and also help students flourish in their careers.  I feel that I will form friendships with both students and professors that will last a lifetime.

The Summer Academy only fueled my desire to enroll in the Bachelor of Science in International Hospitality Management program at EHL.  The four-year curriculum seems like an exciting opportunity to learn about all aspects of hospitality, increase leadership skills, and how to improve on a personal level.  I am confident that by the time I am ready to graduate, EHL will have helped me to achieve the right personal and professional skills so I can provide the right atmosphere for travelers and guests.  I am very excited about beginning the preparatory year, where EHL will teach the minute details of managing a hotel.  I am excited to learn leadership skills and the curriculum aligns with my philosophy that in order to be a good leader, one must learn to serve others.  EHL will have us working in reception, laundry, and other tasks that we, as managers, will have to know.

Being in the hospitality and catering industry, we must have an appreciation of different cultures.  My love of traveling is fueled by an adventurous spirit and an inquisitive mind to learn about people and their cultures.  However, in order to understand a culture, I believe that one must understand the language.  I am fluent in English, Turkish, and Arabic, and look forward to learning more languages to better communicate with different people.  Because I am multi-blingual, I anticipate exploring the BabEHL committee.  Not only would I be interested in learning new languages, but I would also be able to help other students learn and practice English, Turkish, or Arabic.  Learning about food is another essential component of cultures.  I am quite an accomplished cook and baker.  Not only does experiencing the food convey a sense of respect for different cultures, it also educates those outside the culture as well.  I am excited that EHL has the LikeEat and We Wine committees, because I would love to expand upon my passion for food in a more social setting.  I am sure that it will be no surprise to learn that one of my favorite subjects is Human Geography, because I enjoy learning about the different types of people in the world.

My other favorite academic subject is Business Management.  In addition to having an entrepreneurial mindset, I enjoy being a leader because it also presents an opportunity to serve.  I look forward to exploring the Junior Enterprise committee, because I will have the opportunity to interact with like-minded individuals where we can encourage one another and teach strategies to help us succeed in our chosen career path.

EHL is a place to help students develop their dreams by fine-tuning their skills.  While a love of helping people cannot be taught, there are many areas that everyone can be assisted.  For example, even though I am very organized myself, I know that I do not yet have all of the skills required to organize an entire hotel.  EHL will show us how to inspire others to give their best, and make our places of business enjoyable for staff as well as customers.  I am excited to experience first-hand the methods that EHL will use to help us grow into better individuals.

Someday, I hope to provide others with the exceptional experiences that I have come to cherish.  It is my goal to make sure that every single customer and guest receives the “five-star” treatment from my staff and myself.   I am excited to study at EHL because I feel that this university can make that dream a reality.
