Essay

Effective managers must carry a unique set of personal characteristics in their personality that will make them more compelled to be as effective as the managers in a variety of other businesses. Communication is part of the basic personal characteristics for effective managers that can make up a contour of an effective manager for most businesses. This is important because of the barriers that exist in communication for managers These communication barriers can include process barriers, personal barriers, physical barriers, and semantic barriers.

Firstly, an effective manager needs to be have an extroverted personality. It is more than likely that managers will be required to give presentations as well as lead work teams. For the most part, a manager’s job consists of 90% in communication skills. The audiences for manager’s presentations can range from basic groups to sponsors. In some cases audiences may include potential investors. An effective manager will need to be comfortable with speaking out to any dimension of stakeholders and groups of potential customers in a wide array of different situations. If a person carries the traits of an introverted personality, then they will most likely be required to go through long term training and teaching until they feel comfortable enough speaking out to public audiences. This is necessary in order to be fully effective in all management environments. Extroverted people have a tendency to exhibit a natural state of comfort in these kinds of situations which puts them at an advantage.

A process barrier may exist in management usually through the chain of command or due process. The chain of command in management is intended to be a hierarchal structure of every level of management in a business. This helps employees and managers to delegate their duties appropriately so that no single person has to do all of the work by themselves. If somebody on the lower end of the chain of command wants to speak to a manager on the higher end of the chain of command, then they usually need to start at the lower and of the chain of command and work their way up. This is where the process barrier can exists for manages as far as them having an open line of communications with their employees. I would suggest that managers have some form of a comment box for their employees to drop messages into. This way the manager can read through the comments on their own time and return to the employee regarding any messages. This keeps the chain of command intact and also breaks the process barrier for employees and managers.

A personal barrier may exist in management due to employees not knowing their managers on a personal level. This is common as the manager is simply too busy to get to know each and every employee on a personal level. This barrier can be broken if the manager makes it known to employees that they can contact the manager via the drop box regarding personal issues as well as by making them feel comfortable to work for them.

A physical barrier may exist due to a business being divided into multiple buildings or geographic locations. This barrier can be broken through digital communications. A social network specific to the business would be a great way to break both the personal and physical communication barriers. A semantic barrier can be broken if the manager continuously ensures that every employee knows what is going on with the business and how to reach out for help.
