Scope creep is gradual, and changes to the scope could result in changes to the budget, additional work, and the potential for disputes with the client or with vendors. The two types of scope creep deal with technology and business, and when business requirements are not understood or well defined it could lead to scope constantly changing. When the user is not involved enough, the end product could not be of the client’s liking, and involve last minute changes to the product design and requirements. When projects are new to the industry, the underestimation of technology proves to be crucial and set the project back. The endless reworks of the product, changes in the budget, business requirements, technology, and poor management are a crucial issue, and several examples of scope creep (PMI, 2009). Scope creep and be detrimental to a project, it can lead to bad customer experience, loss of client, pressures on the budget and time line, and cause disputes.

In project management, one of the essential and necessary components of any project is to define the scope of the project. According to Wysocki, “the preparation of a detailed project scope statement is critical to project success and builds upon the major deliverables, assumptions, and constraints that are documented during project initiation” (Wysocki, 2009). When defining the scope of the project, the project manager must include all the risks, constraints, and assumptions to be analyzed for the comprehensiveness in adding space for additional components to avoid the impact of scope creep. The inputs include; project charter, business requirements documentation, and the organizational process assets. The project manager is able to gather the initial facts about the project from the project charter.Additionally the project manager can gain background information about the workplace of the stakeholder, and the rules and business model that exists. This information is useful in creating a vision of the final design or requirements for the service or product, which also help to define the project scope. All the inputs help the project manager in coming up with different tools and techniques that help to broaden their planning methods in defining the project scope. By drawing on experience from other projects, they are able to plan a realistic budget and timeline, which takes into consideration the constraints that will affect the project (PMI, 2009).The tools and techniques used in defining the scope includes; expert judgment, product analysis, alternative identifications, and facilitated workshops. Other techniques that can be proved to be useful are observation, surveys, and questions, as well as group decision making. While the outputs are the project scope statement, and the project document updates. (Wyoski, 2009) The outputs will also include the project management plan that incorporates both the Statement of the Scope, and the Work Breakdown Structure, that is useful in actively controlling, monitoring, and adjusting the plan as changes happen during the execution process.

Thinking over the different periods of the project as the whole undertaking reaches an end is a paramount errand. Project Managers must verify no pieces have been left fixed. Throughout this stage, the project manager will meet with group leaders to close out all work requests identified with individual group interest.The closing process is in charge of closing the project, which involves integration, and finalizing all the activities in the project management process. (PMI, 2009) The outputs of the closing process include reviewing and delivering the final product or service, and updates to the organization process access document.
