This paper discusses the effects of an issue of globalization has on three different geographic regions. The globalization issue that will be used is technology. The internet and the technological advances that accompany it are an international phenomenon, and are now accessible to even third world countries. The internet brings people from different countries and cultures together instantly. The United States, China, and India are three geographical regions that have been impacted by this globalization trend.

Technology has made trade much easier for citizens of countries that have limited resources like India. Since the advent of the internet, the people of India have been training in IT fields, and have used this knowledge to make their nation move out of poverty. India is now catching up with the United States financially. Call centers are outsourced from the United States to India for pennies on the dollar. The call center example is used because competency in the use of the internet is required.

The downside of India’s rapid advancement in the understanding of the internet is that United States citizens are losing their jobs due to outsourcing. This is also the case in high paying IT fields. Americans are finding that they are unable to fill the job openings in the IT field because they do not have the proper training. The United States has no other choice than to outsource high paying jobs that should stay in America . Therefore, the American economy suffers while India’s economy thrives. India is only second to China in wealth creation, and that stems from the number of workers that are proficient in the IT sector.

The internet and technology break down geographical barriers to trade, and China is the country that has taken the most advantage of this. China has become the number one exporter of goods to the United States. China can make these products at a much lower cost because of cheap labor and technological advances. Toyota is a great example of how a Chinese company has lead the way in producing top notch products, and exporting them to other countries. There are many Americans that drive Toyotas because they are reliable, and have a long life. In fact Toyotas can have over 200,000 miles before they begin to experience any major problems.

Another advantage that China has is that it is cheaper for Americans to import goods because they (the Americans) do not have to pay high wages to factory workers. Many American autoworkers have lost their jobs due to outsourcing. Once again, America is running behind the eight ball when it comes to having enough skilled workers to work in today’s technology market. Much of China’s trade is with the United States, and this is where the US economy takes a hit.

The United States is supposed to be a world superpower, yet it is continuously losing ground to countries like India and China because it lacks skilled workers in the IT sector. This is a serious problem for the US which is on the verge of going into a recession. President Barack Obama continues to push for vocational training in today’s emerging technological fields. He wants to educate a new workforce that is able to perform the work of the 21^st century.

Rather than being held captive to China and India, the President of the United States wants to break the destructive cycle of jobs being shipped offshore. He wants to pour government funds into training the next generation of workers. US citizens must be trained in the fields of engineering and computer science, or America will lose its standing as a superpower. This will cause investors to look to India and China to invest in tech companies.

While the United States faces a recession, China and India are thriving because of globalization. That is good news for China and India, but bad news for the United States. The irony of the situation is that Americans are very tech savvy. They use Facebook, iPhones, iPods, etc., yet they cannot find jobs. This is because they have trained in fields where there is no longer any prospect of finding work. While Americans sit back and are content to play with their electronic toys, China and India are reaping the benefits.

It is imperative that the United States step up and require that students who enroll in college take tech related courses. This is not to say that they should be forced to major in a tech field, but they should have to take several tech based electives before they can complete their degrees. The government funded student loan program should mandate this before funds are allocated. This may sound harsh, but America is at an economic crossroads; it must train college students so that they can find jobs when they graduate. China and India are to be commended for requiring that their citizens be trained in fields that can help their countries flourish economically.
