Essay

Activity 1: Atmospheric Pressure

When the glass full of water and covered with a lid is turned upside down, small amount of water will tend to slide leaving a space to create a vacuum.  The water inside the glass will have less air which will result to less pressure inside the glass due to the vacuum. The lid will remain in place because of the increased atmospheric pressure surrounding the glass outside. To understand it better, the atmospheric pressure inside the glass will be reduced du9e to the pressure while the atmospheric pressure outside the glass will be increased that will ensure the lid does not get out.

Activity 5 – Condensation Nuclei

When the plate is covered, the salt nucleus tends to increase in size. This means that their volume increases while their density reduces.

Activity 6 – Air and Water as Conductors of Heat

  Temperature
Glass with hot water 82 oC
Fun blowing on the glass 53 oC
Glass under room temp. 24 oC

According to the results it shows that when the glass is exposed to the fan, it loses heat and when it is placed in the room temperature, it loses much heat than before. This clearly indicates that air is a bad conductor of heat than water.

Activity 8 – Terrestrial Radiation

The sand on the surface will reflect a greater part of the radiation. The top part will remain cooler while the heat will be forwarded to the inside surface of the sand. The sand inside will use the heat to dry up and change the color faster than the on top. The radiation process is also used at the sea levels where water on top seems to be cool during the summer day and hotter during the winter day.

Activity 10 – Freezing Point of Water

The water freezes at a temperature lower than 0oC because of the salt that was added. The salt acts like an impurity and lowers the melting point of the water.

In the second part, the drops of the ice will freeze first. This is because the distilled water lowers the melting point much further. The boat floats because of the increase in water density.

Activity 11 – Energy in Weather

Since Ice has the same properties with water, the cohesive force will help them attract each other and hence they will have the same color all over.

Activity 14 – Change In Density

The balloon increased in size because of the increase in density of the air inside it.
