Essay

College education is one of the most important investments we make in our future career, thus, it is as important to choose the right major as it is to get a college degree. I started my college career as Chemistry major but as I have gotten to know myself better, it is clear my future lies in medicine and not in Chemistry. Choosing a career is an important decision and I have spent a great deal of time ensuring I am making the right choice.

Last summer, I did an internship at a hospital where I had the opportunity to work with a wide range of healthcare professionals including physicians. In addition to working closely with physicians, I also performed tasks in the hospital’s lab. The internship helped me realize my interests and strengths are better suited to medicine rather than lab research. Thus, I now have the luxury of work experience to confirm the fact that I will enjoy medicine more than lab research (ethos).

I am also attracted to medicine field because it offers great economic prospects as well as career security that few other professions do. According to United States Department of Labor, job opportunities for physicians and surgeons will grow at an average annual growth rate of staggering 18 percent between 2012 and 2022. In addition, wages for physicians and surgeons are among the highest of all professions (logos) (United State Department of Labor).

I also want to become physician because it will help me make a positive social difference in the society. I have been raised under quite ideal circumstances and I want to use my knowledge and skills to benefit less-fortunate such as providing free or low-cost medical services to low-income groups (pathos).

I hope you will support my decision to change to medicine because not only it will help me realize my true career potential but will also provide me with better future in both economic and career security terms. In addition, I will also be able to make a positive difference in the society.
