Essay

Cultural

People skills are the most important emotional contribution towards effective management.  Leadership and change are inextricably woven together and with this in mind it takes superior emotional intelligence to be able to adapt to change in the business world.  International business poses significant change in the leadership area to mid-level and upper management teams.  “Putting a wide variety of cultures together and understanding shared values always lead to something innovative and dramatic.”[1](Hargrove, 1998). Creating a professional learning environment focusing on a common goal while understanding the limitations possessed by each person is the key to success with cultural differences.

Viability

The viability of a business is measured by its ability to sustainable profits over a long period of time and by its long term survival.  Viability can be accomplished through marketing, partnerships, reduction in expenditure which increases revenue, increasing efficiency which reduces production costs and through assertive ways of increasing competition.  If choosing partnership option to increase viability, chance of success is increased if the middles and bottoms are understood and the each partner understand the others idea and concepts of contribution towards the end result.  There is an art to the success of a partnership because most change fails in the implementation stage.

“It is critical to make tangible the following:

  1. Define deliverables and objectives;
  2. Focus on strengths and Develop win-win agreements
  3. Find internal champions to lead the organization
  4. Wait to legislate after all the queries have been lined out
  5. Finally develop an exit strategy which encompasses a safe exit for all if necessary.” [2](Kawaski, G., 2004).

Implementation Timeline

“Leadership and business is about coping with change and more change demand more leadership ability with respect to service and competitiveness in the industry. [3](Kotter, J., 1990).”  A powerful system of action involves making the decision of what needs to be done through brainstorming techniques, creating networks of people that can aid in accomplishing the agenda and managing to ensure the tasks get done.  This is key in the success of the business and timeline because once the plan is in motion and to ensure the task gets completed on time effective management and leadership skills must be present. Creative problem solving, organizing, motivating, inspiring and controlling all produce predictability and consistency.  “Successful and effective leadership is the ability to get others to behave as the administrator intended.”[4](Bass, B., 1990). “Great leaders have been known to create resonance rather than dissonance.[5]Boyatzis & McKee, 2005).

Acceptance

Think big, find a few soul mates and polarize people! This all increases the likelihood of success. Define the customer and ensure the revenue exceeds the costs.  Have a defined vision, philosophy to follow and principals by which you will not deviate from. Motivate, inspire and energize employees. Marcus Buckingham stated, “Great leaders tap into the needs and fears we all share. Great managers, by contrast, perform their magic by discovering, developing and celebrating what’s different about each person who works for them.”
