Employment and Children: How Do Families and Employers Accommodate the Demands, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 272

Essay

Modern organizations face a wide variety of challenges that involve the direct concerns of employees with growing families. For many existing or expectant mothers, there are considerable concerns that are associated with their ability to manage their daily work-related responsibilities, while also effectively balancing the demands of motherhood. For women facing these roles, employers must exercise flexibility and understanding in managing for time away from the workplace to manage daily activities and concerns (Tan 16). In this context, mothers also must contend with problems and experiences that are associated with their time away from their children, when they are either in school or under the supervision of a child care provider (Tan 17).  In some cases, mothers are challenged by the necessity to work outside of the home to earn a steady income, which may lead to behavioral or psychological problems for their children, particularly when families are plagued by divorce or other tragedies (Tan 17). These children may be particularly susceptible to disciplinary problems or poor academic performance because their mothers are unable to provide them with adequate time and attention (Tan 17). Therefore, it is evident that employers must exercise flexibility and support as needed for female employees facing any number of difficulties with their children, and this may include flexible work schedules, employer-sponsored child care, and other related options (Tan 17). As a result, mothers are often at a greater advantage to overcome problems with their children through increased attention and accessibility (Tan 17). Therefore, employers that work collaboratively with their female employees to manage their motherly concerns are likely to be successful over the long term (Tan 17).
