Engineering, Admission Essay Example

Essay

I spent my childhood in three countries and attended four different schools. There was a time when I lived with my mom alone in the Middle East while my father and an older brother were in the U.S. Thus, I learnt to adapt to various life circumstances at a very young age. I finally moved to the U.S. when I was about to start grade four but having parents in two different countries also meant I would travel often between the U.S. and the Middle East. I realize now that having parents in two entirely different cultures was a blessing in disguise because this has helped me learn valuable cross-cultural skills and given me a better understanding of the current affairs. The opportunity to talk to people from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds not only improved my communication skills but also helped me identify my personal biases and as a result, I have become better at separating opinions from facts. Because of my life experiences, I am also a strong, independent, and an adaptive individual.

One could say I matured a little earlier than my peers and developed an interest in exploring life. Reading became a passionate hobby of mine and a combination of reading intellectual discussions with friends convinced me that mathematics and science are the universal languages and always play a major role in the progress of the civilizations. Fortunately, my skills and strengths complimented my newfound interest and this may be why I have been able to prove myself as an outstanding Math student during four years of high school. I am aiming for a B.Sc. degree in Engineering because I am confident of a great future as an Engineer. I not only enjoy Math and Sciences but my skills and strengths are also a great fit to this major.

My interests include meeting people, travelling, and reading including biographies of inspirational people. From time to time I also read business magazines because of the increasing role of technology in our lives and how some of the largest corporations now are technology companies such as Apple and Google. In one of these magazines I read someone’s opinion that it is good to have a role model among the people you inspire and it struck a chord with me. I know from personal experience how much I feel motivated after reading a biography and how much such an experience increases my self-confidence as well as trust in the human potential. In addition, I also keep a tab on the current affairs because

I have exposure to two completely different cultures and thus, I desire for greater interaction between different cultures than conflicts. From my personal experiences I believe that there are more similarities than differences among the cultures but unfortunately, differences get more exposure in the media and thus, are ingrained into public’s minds. When we get rid of our personal biases and prejudices, we learn to appreciate others more and the key to peace is to understand others and value them.    I also believe that all cultures are equal and I admit my opinion has been influenced by my reading of articles on anthropology.

During my high school years, I taught Math to friends and fellow students free of cost and I hope to continue the same practice here at Purdue. I believe in the advancement of knowledge because it helps us expand our thinking horizon and become more open-minded. I hope to become an Engineer who is able to make difference in the world. Please do not hesitate to let me know should you have any questions. I look forward to meeting you and exploring how I can maximize my learning experience as well as become a valuable member of the community at Purdue University.
