English Exam Waiver, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 376

Essay

I believe that I should be exempted taking the English examination at Oxford University because I am working towards completion of my undergraduate degree at Clark University, where English is the sole medium of instruction and assessment. I have participated in this curriculum since January 2012, which has allowed me to demonstrate my mastery of the language. Since Clark University had small class sizes, it enabled me to have more intimate interactions with my professors and classmates, which helped me build upon my existing language skills. Additionally, I have completed a series of English writing courses, which have greatly improved my writing and reading abilities. In particular, this provided me with the skills necessary to complete professional projects and added to the diversity of words that I use in the completion of my assignments, allowing me to precisely refine information acquired from literature. The series of English courses I have taken include expository writing, and the art and science of management. I will take a related class on the philosophy of personal valuesin Spring 2015.

Besides taking many English reading and writing classes, I have also successfully completedseveral research projectsinvolving the economics of sports, in addition to econometrics andcomparative foreign policy. These research experiences elevated my writing and reading skills to an academic level by enriching my ability to work independently, incorporating many different sources to form a thesis. In my senior year in Clark University, I completed a group project that played an important role in my college studying. It improved the way that I communicate in English with other students, which allowed me to present my research results in a professional manner.

Ultimately, the experiences that I have gained from my college courses bolstered my ability to speak and understand English at an academic level. Furthermore, the classroom environmenthas offered me a great opportunity to practice my speaking and listening skills, which has included daily talkingwith friends. In my spare time, I enjoy reading English novels, following news from CNN and New York Times, and have also worked as a volunteer in the university’s thrift store. I believe that these experiences will allow me to continue to build my English skills, but I believe that I am already proficient enough in the language to excel in your program.
