English the Official U.S. Language, Research Paper Example

Research Paper

There is an ongoing debate about whether or not to make English the official language of the United States. People are extremely passionate on both sides of this issue. This paper will present the case for making English the official language of this country, supporting the argument with examples that reinforce this stand.

One clear point in favor of passing such legislation is financial: the country is in terrible economic condition with increasing debt, and Congress is in the process of trying to pass a budget that includes cutting costs. It is extremely expensive for the government to have to print all forms and provide services in both English and Spanish, and on occasion, other languages as well. This creates a disincentive for people to learn the language of their adopted country, and actually enables them to remain isolated. Simply printing all official documents and providing services in English would save money, and at this particular point in history, that needs to be a priority.

In addition, making English the official language would help to create unity in a country that is far too divided. If people cannot speak the language, they are unable to be active members of the larger community, and will remain isolated in their own subgroups. For example, people who cannot speak English are at a significant disadvantage when out in public because they are unable to ask for directions, find services that they need, and may be unable to read signs, which could cause problems with safety. Many such people rely on their young children who are learning English in school to take control of situations because they cannot communicate with other Americans themselves. This puts an unnecessary burden on children, and can also provide discomfort because children are extremely self-conscious about their parents to begin with. Finally, if immigrants know that they must learn English, they will increase their opportunities for better jobs, academics, and an easier quality of life related to feeling comfortable and fitting in with the rest of society.
