Enlightened Power: How Women are Transforming the Practice of Leadership
The Natural Leadership Talents of Women
Background
The foreground of leadership is an individual’s enhanced capacity to direct others into a path that they are supposed to tread upon. Women are however noted to have a distinct process of handling the demand of leading their teams and organizations due to the option of being ‘naturally selected’ for the job. Such power however is not immediately incurred by a person. The idea of developing leadership skills from birth is somewhat vague in its own form. Relatively though, there is the existence of instinct. The way humans think and the way the physical, mental and emotional attributes humans develop through time affects the way they act upon others; which eventually affects their instinct. When it comes to developing leadership instinct, Helen Fisher intends to show how women have a naturally-based personal development that leads them into growing up with talents for leadership. In her article entitled The Natural Leadership Talents of Women, she points out how scientific evidence supports such idea and how this information could actually help organizations today when it comes to designating women leaders in their teams.
Analysis of Information
Fisher tries to argue the men and women were expected to do different tasks based on their physical, emotional and mental capacities. Men, being more physical, were specifically expected to stretch their muscles and work hard for the family’s food source, while the women were expected to care for the house and direct the children as they grow up. In a way, in such a traditional picture of family rearing, the women are specifically expected to take on management responsibilities at a higher rate compared to what the men are supposed to do in the field.
As the modern time takes over, the culture of men and women having a certain place in the society, taking particular tasks have specifically diminished. The identification of gender and how it should define what one could and should do has specifically changed through time. In this day and age, Fisher tries to prove that through evidence, it could be seen how women handle challenges with better ease compared to men. Multitasking is one of the most important talents that women have that makes them fit enough to take leadership positions. This is only one among the many talents that prove the overall worth of women when it comes to applying proper and strong leadership skills.
In context, the article of Fisher is strong enough especially in proving its point with regards feminine strength in relation to leadership application. Utilizing scientific and historical evidence, she provides her readers with the most profound yet mind-provoking thoughts about how women are ‘born’ to be good leaders. Nevertheless, it fails to take into account that there are some odd areas to which men take efficient control of their people. Fisher failed to use statistics and the data that it could provide to prove such matter. Relatively, men are considered much better chefs especially in directing huge number of people in the kitchen during peak-meal times in high ranking restaurants. Perceptively, there are areas where women are expected to work better than men, but it should not be set aside that there are also some areas of leadership that require the control and authority of men for direction.
Conclusion
Fisher’s command in the field of management gives her ample authority in defining what leadership is and how feminine instincts have actually been used through time to identify such talents which she basically found effective through her personal experiences. Such a categorical understanding on the matter makes her assumptions and definitions of the topic strong enough to define leadership as a whole. The author’s conviction on the principles of natural selection and how it relates to the condition of development on how gender is viewed in the society gives her a distinct capacity to present correlation between the elements of human physique and human psychology. In relation to her discussion of such an idea and theory about natural selection and gender responsibility, men have the talent to direct, however women tend to become more understanding, more reasonable at times. In this case, the complementary work of men and women in an organization as leaders provide the best source of foundation for a better working system that employees could follow through in relation to how they complete their tasks as expected. This principle could be applied even in organizations today.
