Clifford’s article reviews the strengths of the United States to support global entrepreneur enterprises. The main strengths the author finds that drive the U.S. entrepreneurial spirit:

Strengths

The entrepreneurial culture and tradition of United States. In America, there is a culture of self-made people is strong. As the author puts it, “entrepreneurship is ‘part and parcel of the country’s DNA,'”

Current financial market recovery supports confidence in the U.S. economy. This also results in a higher level of entrepreneurial motivation.

Innovation leadership. Through successfully attracting talent and supporting innovation within the United States, government policies are motivating new enterprises to invest into emerging technologies and innovative solutions.

Emerging environmental technology. This acts like a strong driver for growth and the government’s incentives are creating a positive start-up environment for U.S. entrepreneurs.

On the other hand, Clifford (2013) also finds some serious weaknesses within the U.S. environment that might discourage people to set up a new enterprise or expand their business in the United States. These negative conditions are listed below.

Weaknesses

Highest corporate tax in the G20. Taxation rates can hold back companies from increasing revenues or entrepreneurs to start up a business.

Decreased support for entrepreneurs. The level of support and advice for entrepreneurs has a great impact on their confidence in success. The lower the support is the less likely they will be vary of starting a business.

Cut in the research and development funding within the government budget. This reduces companies’ ability to create global competitive advantages.

Education level of science and mathematics in the United States is at a lower level than in other G20 countries. This results in reduced ability of entrepreneurs in skillful and rational decision-making.
