Equality and Discrimination, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 287

Essay

I am writing to inform you that racial discrimination and inequality are as prevalent today as they were during the nineteenth century. Cases of racial discrimination have become common in the recent past. The discrimination is always executed either knowingly or unknowingly by the perpetrators in different contexts of life.

The stop and frisk policy that required law enforcement officers to stop suspicious individuals on the streets and check whether they were carrying any illegal items of were engaging in criminal activities majorly targeted minority groups, and especially African Americans. An example is given of a young African American man who was stopped 16 times while taking his stroll in the evening, and during all the stoppage times, the officers never found him with anything suspicious. The fact that he was of African American origin was enough to render him a troublemaker.

Another example of discrimination and inequality in the present society is experienced during hiring processes. Human resource officers still apply anti-black hiring discriminatory practices when recruiting new talents. On average, Caucasian applicants are 36% more likely to receive call-backs after submitting their resumes than their counterparts from minority groups such as African Americans and Latinos. Similar forms of discrimination have existed in the history of The US. The inequalities leave youths from minority groups with unemployment issues that later transform into increased crime rates.

My intention to inform you about the existence and impact of discrimination and inequality in our society is to enable you to understand the need for social change to overturn the prevailing white supremacy in the country. Acknowledging the issue could also enable you to understand how to tackle the problem in case you find yourself being discriminated against by people from other races.
