Equus and the Crucible, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 292

Essay

Every character in a play specifically takes a distinct role when it comes to defining the entire plot’s value. The plays Equus and The Crucible specifically provide a distinct indication on this particular value. Each play has particular characters that have seemingly short appearances but have distinct role in the presentations. For instance, in The Crucible, John Willard, also known as George Herrick, was a mere marshal to the Salem witch trials. Being so, his appearances in particular scenes were specifically short; however, the role he plays is rather important especially in relation to the bringing of the accused witches in the land. Relatively, his role was a depiction on how the society viewed smart women and how they norms try to regulate such conditions through alienating these individuals and making the connection on how people should view intelligence among women as if it is an element of sin, a distinct matter that should be removed from the society.

Jill on the other hand has a specific role she has taken on in the story of Equus. Although she was only presented at the ending scenes of the story, her character took a great turn especially when it comes to bringing about the truth behind Alan’s psychological condition. His fetish about horses and the way they defined ‘godness’ in his eyes provide a distinct indication on how supposed religious beliefs have caused him to tread along a path that is unacceptable and unethical in many terms. The problem between religion and social norms have been evidently shown through Jill’s involvement in the life of Alan, an important factor that defines overall being of Alan as a person alienated from social facts due to religious sanctions he was taught of from his younger years.
