Review the recording of your group and answer the following questions:

Based on the scoring, was your team more effective at solving the ranking task than individual members? Provide an analysis of the scores calculated in class and attach that analysis to this homework.

The team worked well together. The analysis of the individual scores was 52 and team score was 41. The team members scored as follows: Jessica 70; Van 60; Robert 70; Sheharyar 68; and Sijia 52. The team members average score was 64; 64-41 = a 23 point gain. The best individual score was Sijia. The team scored better as a group than as individuals, this reflects the functionality of the team.

If your team was not more effective at solving the tanking task than individuals, why not?  The team was effective at solving the tanking task because each member was actively involved in this group. Other groups I have been in have always had one or two people who did the most work and everyone else was able to minimally participate. This team was effective at solving the taking task than individual because each person had new ideas and suggestions to the project.

Assess your team’s effectiveness in the following areas:

Communication

Who talks the most? The least? There is not person who I could say talked less than the others. Everyone spoke a lot and brought new things to the table for the others think about and use. There is no one who talked more than others either.

How are “silent” and “noisy” members handled? We didn’t have to handle noisy or silent members so I don’t know how they would be handled if they were involved in a team assignment.

Is communication participation balanced or do some individual(s) dominate? The communication participation is balanced and no individual’s dominated. Everyone talked, and we all listened when the others talked, and when we agreed we moved on to the next topic. If we disagreed we would go back to discussing it until we all agreed on a solution.

Influence

Who has the most influence on the team’s decisions? There was no one person who influenced the team’s decision over any others. Whoever made the most reasonable and logical points were taken for the assignment. There were many suggestions that did not work but all individuals influenced each other the same.

Whose ideas are ignored? What is the result? The only time that an idea was ignored was when Sijia felt that the water was the least important. We didn’t agree so we decided to go another way and insisted that water being ranked 8. The results directly impacted our final results by 7 points.

Conflict/disagreements

How much disagreement was there? How was it handled? There were very little disagreement. We all had our point of views, not everyone always agreed with each other’s position. However, we did agree that the majority would be the deciding factor, and we had no disagreements as a result.

Is there a good balance between disagreements leading to discussion versus disagreement that hampers progress? The disagreements only led to more discussion. There was no point where the progress was effected by the disagreements that were brought into the project.

Do members take arguments personally? There was no arguments that occurred in the group. When we didn’t agree we talked it out till everyone was able to agree on the direction we needed to take.

Task functions

Do team members make suggestions about the best way to approach the task? The first thing we did as a team was to discuss whether we should move or stay. Once that decision was made, we than began to discuss the items we would need for survival in the situation we were facing. Having a specific direction made it easier to approach the task we were addressing.

Is anyone paying attention to how the group is using its time? The time frame that we set aside was reasonable for the requirements of the project. Every item function was discussed in perfect time and no one was left having to contribute additional time out of what we set aside for the project.

How does the group generate ideas? Is this procedure effective?

The group generated ideas by sitting around a table and taking the tank task and talking about the options. For the most part all opinions that were brought to the table were equal. The procedure of the team’s contribution was effective. We were able to learn a lot from not only the assignment but also from each other.

Maintenance functions

Are members really listening to each other? Yes, there was no way to be involved in this team without listening to what each individual was offering. We all learned from each other’s suggestions and was able to form new ideas and directions for the project.

Do members build on each other’s ideas? Yes, each member would bring an idea to the table and we would discuss it. This meant we added or took away from the each other’s ideas.

Decision making processes

Does the group identify its basic objectives (e.g., to survive)? The group decided the main objective was to stay here, keep warm and remain alive. The other strategies compromised the potential of survival too much.

Does the group carefully consider the pros and cons of each possible strategy? Yes, every possible solution was weighed in efforts to determine which strategy would create the best outcome. This required us to consider many different options before recommending the teams decided strategy.

How does the group decide on the rankings of the individual items? The ranking is done through weighing participation. The effectiveness of what each individual brings to the project and their voice in creating the solution.

What was your role in the group task? Were you satisfied with the way the team worked together? What would you change that might make your team more effective? What would you do to improve your own performance?

My personal role in the group task was to participate with the other in providing a solution. The team worked together because we brain-stormed the various suggestions and came up with the best solution for the problem we were facing. I was very satisfied with how our team worked, we all gave our input and no one was made to feel that their contribution was less than others. I cannot make recommendations for improvements of this team because it was a great experience and we all worked well together. This is the best team experience I have had so far. I felt I equally contributed, but for recommendations for improvements, I would try to take more of a leadership role in the group. I was actively involved but I never took the lead.
