Ethical Versus the Unethical Value of Lying in a Relationship, Essay Example

Pages: 3

Words: 703

Essay

It is ethical to lie to your partner to keep your relationship with her or with him. Notably, there are several relationship principles that often relate love to honesty and truth. It is a distinct element of human relationships to indicate relationship through the bonding aspects of love. However, there are instances when love becomes vaguely the reason for one to stay within the bond. Perhaps, there are even instances when one simply made a mistake of not remaining loyal to his partner. May it be the woman or the man that acquired the mistake; it is rather a reflex response for one to lie about it just to be able to keep the relationship intact.

One might disagree to this as it is evidently obvious that most people at present depend on the ideals of honesty just to be able to keep a relationship free from any particular tension that could endanger the ties that the partners share between each other. With the fear of breaking the ties, the one who usually makes a mistake specifically takes the chance to save what is left of the relationship. Trying to justify their act; as if saying that they may have never committed such a mistake if the other party took notice of the situation, these individuals often point out that it would do more harm to them, their partner and their relationship if they will divulge the truth of the matter.

Although it is true that a lie might be able to save a relationship, this weakens my argument especially if the focus is to be directed towards the meaning of what ‘true love’ is all about. Considerably, people are taught that true love understands even beyond the most unforgivable points of relationship faults. Relatively, if one keeps a particular mistake he has done from his partner, he then defies the ideal meaning of love, which means that he has less than true love shared towards his partner. May it be the woman or the man, the individual who has made a mistake needs to take a stand in relation to how they perceive the value of their relationship with their mate. Is it mainly based on pretence, or is it based on solid grounds of reason that could surpass particular mistakes? Most often than not, humans fail to see the power behind love. The understanding and the patience that comes along with it is most often than not stronger than the desire to maintain an unstained relationship with one’s mate. Keeping a secret from one’s partner often burdens the relationship. This is the reason why when a mistake that has been kept for so long is out in the open, the other party to whom the truth was kept from, feel a disdain reaction as if feeling betrayed.

Lying in itself is already a mistake. Using it to cover another mistake has been used by many individuals in relationships as a justifiable act. Noting that they would do anything to save the relationship that they share with the one they love, these individuals often tend to forget the outcome of the situation when the truth comes out, or at some point, they simply do not want to care about such issues yet as it would complicate things at present. Trying to run away from the possible consequences of their acts, they choose to taint their relationship with their mate than to keep it free from any doubts that may cause it to rotten in the future.

Protecting a particular relationship from being destroyed comes from the determination of both parties to remain loyal to their mates no matter what. It is only through this determination that the complication of lying could be avoided. However, in the context of people being imperfect and all, it is often considered that there should always be a space for making mistakes and amending them at the same time. Notably, recognizing such value for love and acceptance, people remain confused as to whether or not it is ethical or unethical to use lying as primary glue that holds a relationship stronger avoiding it to crumble from mistakes done by one or both of the partners bounded by a supposedly loving relationship.
