Is it difficult for someone from the country to adjust to the city?
Probably imposing a distinct description on the life of the people in the Deep South during the era of Depression, the story of A Worn Path represents a woman who constantly takes the same route to go to from her home to town to be able to get the medical supplies that her son needs. Notably, it could be understood that Eudora Welty tried to show the distinct different of the country life with the city life to present to her readers what the old woman was willing to take in order to make sure that her grandson survives. Old as she was, such a journey may be hard to consider especially noting her weakening state. Nevertheless, she tries to care less about such situation especially that she wants to do such an errand for the sake of taking care of someone she loves dearly.
The differences between the said communities would have to do more about the people and the living condition that the people have to deal with in both areas. Country living [during the time of depression] subjects the people in compelling conditions of having to deal with the need to earn money under meager earnings while they put specifically long days of hard work into their duties. With such condition of living, people in the country side are set to accept everything that comes along their way. They have lesser opportunities to pick from hence making it harder for them to pick the right work that might fit their skills. The economic depression during the time [when the story is set to have occurred] specifically even made such fact harder to deal with. The lack of opportunities and choices in the countryside makes it necessary for the people to be contented. The choice to survive comes along with the need to become more compelled with especially when it comes to determining the condition of the their lives and that of their loved ones.
On the other hand, in her journey to town where the situation is more city-like, the old woman encounters several people that specifically indicates a transition in culture and living condition from the countryside towards the urbanized areas. Unlike in the countryside, the city offers more opportunities. The supposedly empty lots that the old woman had to pass through in the country side was determinably changed along the way as he had to deal with busier roads, people dealing with their own issues as they walk their way in the streets, somehow, the old woman’s observation on the situations that she had to deal with in her journey defined her determination even further.
Shall a person undergo a sense of cultural shock as she enters the city? Somehow, her first journeys may have been hard enough to handle. The transition of the culture of the people and the areas she had to go through in her journey may have affected her perception of the situation she needs to push through with. Nevertheless, it is her willingness that kept her coming back within the same route every now and again. She wanted to make sure that she completes her mission in relation to the long journey she takes. Considerably, although the transformation of situations may be evident, she did not care so much about it especially that she is trying to survive the journey for the sake of her grandson’s health.
Today people transfer from one place to another [sometimes even from one country to another] because of different reasons. Their determined goals to provide better lives for their loved ones keep them going on and specifically focused on the mission that they are aiming to complete. Their desire to gain better lives and make a better future for those who they care for makes it easier for them to survive the challenge of adjusting to a new life, just as that of the old woman who cared so much for her grandson and had her eyes on saving his life making it easier for her to contend with the challenges of her journey and the constant transitions she had to go through.
