Essay

The student-athlete survey conducted by the Athletic Department of C SUB provides the management of the Department with a better insight into the needs, worries, and desires of the students, who are while studying at the University, are also following their sport careers. Some of the recommendations and suggestions proposed by students may be very useful in improving the attitude, the conditions, and the atmosphere at the Athletic Department.

Reasons for selecting C SUB. Survey shows that students choose to study at C SUB for a variety of reasons, the main among which are the following:

  • Good possibilities to study and pursue sport career at the same time;
  • Offer of good educational and athletic programs;
  • Reasonable costs of programs;

But at the same time a great percentage of students confessed and they have chosen to study at C SUB because they had no other choice and they wouldn’t probably do it again if they had an opportunity to re-choose their university.

Suggestions / recommendations for improvements.While there are quite a lot of students who said that they are satisfied with the present programs and policies of the Athletic Department at C SUB, there were a number of recommendations and suggestions for improvement.

  • Improvement of facilities and equipment. The recommendations were made about the improvement of facilities themselves, as well as about their better availability to students. Main suggestions were made about the improvement of: gym, study hall, weight rooms, locker rooms, and the track.
  • There are a lot of grievances about the inappropriate attitude of teachers, coaches, advisors, and other faculty members toward students. And so there were a lot of suggestions for making changes in the staff of the Department, and for hiring more coaches.
  • Another main issue raised by students is the quality and amount of food provided to them during sport trips. A lot of students propose to improve the nutrition on the trips.

Help in realizing the potential. The suggestions about how the Department can help students to realize their potential are quite the same from the athletic and academic points of view. Following suggestions were made:

  • Establishing better counseling programs. A lot of students have problems with make decisions about their future majors and careers and so they propose that more counseling should be provided at this point. Also more counseling should be given in the process of choosing subjects and arranging schedules.
  • A lot of students find it difficult to balance between their academic career and the athletic one. And so they propose that the better system of tutoring should be made for those students who are going on the sport trips, and also a special teacher should work with them while they are on these trips. Also students ask for more adjustment, flexibility and loyalty from teachers and coaches, who are sometimes putting too much pressure on them in choosing between trainings and classes.
  • A lot of students-athletes ask for better encouragement, motivation and positive reinforcement from the side of their coaches and teachers to achieve their athletic and academic goals.
  • Better promotion of the sport events should be established, so that students-athletes may get more cheering and encouragement from their fellow students. Plus a better recognition system should be made.
  • Providing better financial support and better system of funds distribution among teams and faculties.

In overall, students say that the Department is helping them to realize their athletic and academic potential by providing good career opportunities (in sport as well), with the help of professional teachers and coaches, and through the high standards of education and development.

The issue of sexual harassment. The majority of the students say that they have never been sexually harassed at C SUB and that they can’t remember of any situation that can be seen as a sexual harassment.

Conclusion

The conducted survey has shown that while a great part of students is satisfied with their study at C SUB, there are quite a lot of issues that require special attention form the management of the Athletic Department. The answers of students to the questions of the survey provide direct clues to how the conditions, programs and policies of study and trainings can be improved
