Intervention 1: Management of Depression

Awareness, knowledge, attitudes and behavior, and quality of life will be monitored throughout the program.  Qualitative data will be measured by monthly subjective questionnaires selected by licensed therapists.  The brief quiz after initial orientation will allow residents to better gauge their emotional state.  Residents will have better stress-management and conflict resolution skills.  Improvement of the residents’ emotional health will be displayed with increased participation in activities. Weekly therapy sessions will be used to evaluate the progress of the residents’ emotional state.  Quantitative data will be measured by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV-TR) criteria.

Data will be analyzed by licensed therapists and summarized in a report that will include charts showing improvement in statistical readings.  The report will be reviewed after three consecutive months.

Intervention 2: Nutrition

Awareness, knowledge, attitudes and behavior, and quality of life will be monitored throughout the program.  Qualitative data will be measured by monthly subjective questionnaires, selected by health care professionals once a month.  At the end of the initial orientation, a quiz based on USDA nutrition guidelines will be administered to the residents. They will take another quiz at the end of three months to see their improvement.  By the end of the program, residents will learn the necessary skills to plan and prepare simple meals.  Objective progress will be monitored with blood pressure readings, weight, and samples of blood and urine.  Blood pressure and weight will be measured weekly and blood and urine samples will be measured every two weeks.  At the end of three months, total progress will be calculated and a 25% improvement in the results is anticipated.

Data will be analyzed by the health care professionals and summarized in a report that will include charts showing improvement in statistical readings.  The report will be reviewed after three consecutive months.

Intervention 3: Physical Fitness

Knowledge, attitudes and behavior, physical health, and quality of life will be monitored throughout the program.  Qualitative data will be measured by monthly subjective questionnaires selected by the health care professionals.  Quantitative data will be measured by results of blood pressure, weight, heart rate, grip strength, lung capacity, and samples of blood and urine. Blood pressure, weight, and blood and urine samples may be shared with the results of the nutrition program. Blood pressure, weight, grip strength, and lung capacity will be measured weekly. Blood and urine samples will be recorded weekly.

Data will be analyzed by the health care professionals and summarized in a report that will include charts showing improvement in statistical readings.   The report will be an ongoing process of evaluation and will be reviewed after three consecutive months.
