Everyone Has the Right to Life, Essay Example

The article articulates on three elements in the life of a person which are strongly interconnected. They are rights to life, liberty as well as security. According to UNHRC, 1982, man is entitled to a supreme and basic right of life. Right to life encompasses the livelihood and dignity of man (Dinan, 2008). The state has the responsibility of protecting man against any actions by any public or private entities which may be perceived as unwarranted. This entails prohibition of arbitrary killings by any state agents, committing any form of offence to a person, protecting individuals from criminal activities by other people, and any other form of violation of human rights (Marilyn, 2000).

Rights to liberty entails protection of a person’s physical liberty that is interrelated to other rights. This include non deprivation of liberty based on procedures in established laws, prohibition of arbitrary arrest, exile or detention, security from unwarranted search and seizure, rights to access to information and legal advice for persons under arrest, right of presentation to trial judge, no detention while awaiting trial, right of humane and dignified treatment and the right of freedom from torture, degrading, cruel as well as inhumane treatment (UNESCO Social and Human Sciences, 2009).

A person is also entitled to rights of security which has a close connection to rights to liberty. The state has the responsibility of keeping the citizens in a safe environment which incorporates protection from domestic violence and terrorism threats (Phillips, 2008). This area covers national security and individual security both public and private. The physical integrity of a person is covered in right to security which starts from as low as direct physical trauma and rights of refusal of medical treatment.
