Essay

The description of a hero is something that has been argued over for many centuries now. Some of the most fundamental descriptions that humanity has acquired over the years have been derived from ancient Greek texts where heroes are a prevalent theme. Miriam Polster presents to us her view of a hero in her writing Eve’s Daughter by the use of some basic characteristics that she describes as essential within every hero. Analyzing the characteristics that she describes and her personal view of her everyday hero I personally agree with the view that she brings forward of the hero. Some of the major aspects that she emphasizes within every hero are: respect for others, accurate decisions, a different view of the world that seeks the good, strength mentally and physically, and the avoidance of publicity and taking a more humble approach to the things they do. Moreover, I appreciate the view that she proposes of finding everyday heroes since it allows us to value people that are often overlooked in our society.

Moving forward with her view of heroes Polster gives a small description for each of the characteristics that she emphasizes as common within every hero we find in stories. Respect for the human life is a characteristic that is entitled within this list because every hero seeks to save people’s lives and would give up their own to accomplish it. To effectuate the characteristics that she gives for heroes Polster gives real world examples of women that exemplify these characteristics in their everyday lives. The characteristic that Polster places the most emphasis on is courage as she gives an elongated description of this characteristic. Polster finds courage such a necessity for a hero that she describes it a redundant when it is mentioned. The example that she provides for this characteristic is also the one I agree with the most since she uses Marie Curie. Curie risked her life for the benefit of humanity and achieved great accomplishments.
