Evidence of Literature, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 294

Essay

Evidence-based medicine incorporates many different principles that are acquired through prior experiences and subsequent knowledge that is derived in these settings. Evidence-based literature supports the continued growth and expansion of knowledge in a manner that is consistent with the improvement of patient care outcomes across different disciplines. Therefore, it is necessary to address levels of evidence using existing knowledge and frameworks that will be applicable to a variety of settings, given the challenges associated with nursing-based terminology and resources.

Evidence possesses many different meanings and applications; therefore, it is not the same across all areas (UIC, 2014). As a result, nurses must be able to identify different forms of evidence that will be used to identify specific clinical questions in accordance with the conditions to be evaluated (UIC, 2014). Levels of evidence include the following: 1) therapy, using double-blind, randomized controlled trials: 2) diagnosis, using controlled trials; 3) prognosis, using cohort studies; 4) etiology/harm, using cohort studies; 5) prevention, using randomized controlled trials and cohort studies, and 6) quality improvement, using randomized controlled trials (UIC, 2014).

These tools support the continued growth of practice settings through the extraction of evidence that is applicable to a number of different scenarios or examples that are used in real-world nursing settings (UIC, 2014). Nurses working as researchers must identify the type of study that they want to use and determine how to utilize existing evidence for the literature review. In addition, they must identify the level of evidence that they are seeking to understand with the study questions to be considered. This framework will support the development of a new research project and strive to achieve the desired objectives, using the evidence that is generated.
