Expanding and Evolving Gender Roles, Essay Example

Essay

One aspect of mine that is invariably predominant in my identity as a human being is that of being a hard-worker. I strongly believe in the idea that an individual is able to attain whatever he or she wants if he or she is willing to put in the amount of work necessary in order to obtain a certain goal. Because of these incentives, it goes without saying that I would most likely familiarize with the character of Sarah Penn because of what a hard worker she portrays herself to be throughout the novel. Despite the fact that she gets tired of her husband towards the end of the novel, she is seen as a loving and caring wife throughout the majority of the scenes in the novel. She only grows tired of the manner in which she is treated by her husband, which is entirely comprehendible.

The manner in which Hemingway is able to portray the character of Nick and his attitude towards the fish he is catching tells a lot about Hemingway. Here, Hemingway was most probably trying to demonstrate that if individuals (mostly men) are to ever give in to their own emotions, they could be put in grave danger of losing grasp of everything that they have because they would ultimately be caring too much about certain things. This same aspect is shown in Dr. Adams in the short story, Big Two-Hearted River in which the surgeon must not come to personal terms with his patients or he could put their lives at risk for caring too much about them. All in all, both of these stories are able to portray their own lessons.
