- Early in the development of the city, skyscrapers made land more usable by allowing for more floor space on a fixed area of land. The focus on the third dimension was a key source of economic growth at the advent of the 20th
- Skyscrapers allow for vertical density as opposed to the population sprawling out over larger area. This density allows people to live more closely to each other, making public transportation and walking more lucrative and making the car less important in the city.
- They look to other densely populated financial cities such as Tokyo or Hong Kong. They have managed to pack dense populations into their areas through skyscrapers. One thing those cities do more often than American cities is multiuse buildings, in which commercial and residential parties occupy the buildings.
- I support high density plans such as an increase in skyscrapers. Some infrastructure would have to be improved to accommodate more people in many neighborhoods, but it is certainly in the best environmental interests to cluster people more tightly and reduce the amount of miles driven in New York City based commutes.
- There are 60,000 diesel trucks a week in the neighborhood. This is somewhat due to the many plants and factories and other facilities that bring in all kinds of urban downsides. On top of that, there is one fifth as much park space per capita in the Bronx than there is in the rest of the city. The residents of the South Bronx neighborhood often cannot access the river due to the facilities in the area. This environmental inequality, in which these residents experience great deals of environmental costs and little benefit, is a reflection of the economic inequality between the Bronx and other boroughs.
- She was lead to park space that lead to the river by a stray dog. The space was in squalor, having been overrun with trash and litter. She referred to it as an illegal dump, where people threw their garbage without permission or any of the environmental measures that help landfills avoid creating environmental catastrophe. Seeing this, she dedicated herself and inspiring volunteer campaigns to help clean up this space to give her neighbors and herself an access to a riverfront park space, which the south Bronx often does not have due to the tendency to build landfills, sewage treatment plants, and other similar facilities. This was the beginning of similar efforts across the borough.
- New York City in the 1930s made a commitment to lower income housing, focusing not just on the physical stock of living space, but also community investments and maintenance in these cities. This is unique not only for America, but for the world.
- They were willing to hire great deals of extra workers for that maintenance than other cities were willing to commit to. The more successful maintenance was due largely to a decision. New York made a commitment to high quality public housing that other cities never did.
- Challenges today include lower levels of financial support for the New York City Housing Authority. Today, there is less appetite for expanding public housing stock or the quality of life.
