Family Environmental Scale (FES), Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 282

Essay

Data Collection Procedures

The data collection strategies that will be used for my research is based on both observing and interviewing participants. The information that will be collected will involve determinants of family interactions before and after the application of the intervention. The family environment scale (FES) will be utilize to convert data that is generally considered to be quantitative into qualitative values.

One concern of my proposed data collection strategy is that it will be difficult to ensure that the FES characteristics of each family will be identified and measured in an identical way. It is therefore necessary for the researcher to practice the application of this method in order to ensure that consistency can be obtained before the participants are interviewed. There are not ethical and legal concerns involved with this method, provided that all participants are consented properly.

Conventionally, the FES has been a useful tool that family therapists use to gain a greater understanding of family relationships (Adam et al., 2010). The scale has been used in a variety of studies and has been validated and modified to serve a variety of applications. While other systems of coding can be utilized to achieve this purpose, it is simpler to use a widespread system to ensure that the potential for comparisons between studies can be made. Another consideration of the advantage of the FES is that it provides researchers with numbers that can be analyzed using traditional quantitative analysis methods. This allows researchers to make more concrete comparisons across two or more groups.
