Favorite Artists, Essay Example

Essay

For chapter 16, my favorite artist was Ilya Bolotowsky. Arriving through the De Stijl style of modernism, and from the inspiration of Piet Mondrian, Bolotowsky made interesting strides in his work. His harmony and spatial tension, as well as the overall development of his style, is very appealing and interesting to study.

David Smith was my choice for chapter 17, a proponent of abstract expressionism. While he distanced himself from the New York art scene, the symbolism in his work is of particular note. For instance, his use of steel in his work to produce a unique piece of art – every time – is an aspect of his work that I found enjoyable to see.

For chapter 18, my choice was Arnaldo Pomodoro. One thing I enjoyed about his work is his desire to stick to fundamental geometric shapes. Noted for his themes of self-destruction and regeneration, as critics note due to massive architectonic forms, the result is responsible for a number of great pieces. I particularly enjoy his “Sphere Within Sphere” from the Italian sculptor.

In chapter 19, my choice was the very popular artist Andy Warhol. The controversial nature of Warhol is evident, but it is the universal application of his works – which span not only paintings and films, but sculpture, drawing, photography, and even digital art – that is impressive to me. Of course, his mark on pop art is undeniably significant.

For chapter 20, my choice was the Swiss painter and sculptor Jean Tinguely. His kinetic artwork is engaging and incredibly interesting, such as the peaceful or loud “Chaos I” piece. From the sheer impressiveness of his pieces to the satirization of the industrial world, there is much to study on the Swiss artist.

In chapter 21, my choice has to rest with Le Courbusier. The father of modern architecture, his influence on urban planning is quite noticeable. Dedicated to provide better living conditions to those in crowded cities, his aesthetic detail is engaging as well – as seen in his five points of architecture.

For chapter 22, my choice was Claes Oldenburg. The humorous and brash approach to art is particularly enjoyable, as can be seen from his many interesting works. From an umbrella to a clothespin, there is plenty to like about the artist’s indoor and outdoor works. It is all the more interesting that he carried out may of his works with his late wife.

In chapter 23, my choice was the artist and filmmaker Julian Schnabel. A prominent name in the Neo-expressionism movement, Schnabel is interesting due to the energy that is felt in his work. His “plate paintings” are very engaging as well, blending an underlying emotional theme with the beauty of the work.

In chapter 24, my choice was the Dutch photographer Rineke Dijkstra. It’s interesting to see how the photographer made her mark in the medium, as the ‘90s were open to photography. Through a simple portrait or series, Dijkstra has captured attention. Her documentation of refugees is particularly engaging to learn about.

In chapter 25, my favorite artist was Ricardo Bofill. The influence on French architecture is undeniable, as the architect has created landmarks upon landmarks. Apart from this, his attention to housing for lower-income families is very commendable and interesting to see, in addition to the masterpieces he has created.
