This memo is to request funding for a recently created non-profit located in the Saint Louis area.

Business Description

Code to Career STL is a local non-profit organization that focuses on educating children in low-income communities the skill of coding.

Market Need

The community surrounding the Normandy School District contain an overwhelming segment of households considered low-income. These households average less than $35,000 per year, in which many contain families who have at least one child between the ages of 14 and 18. This community also contains an overwhelming majority of individuals over the age of 25 who do not have any post-secondary education. This can be considered a factor into the career opportunities, and by extension the average income, the individuals of this community are able to attain.

The field of informational technology is an excellent career choice in the city of Saint Louis. By partnering with the Normandy School District to provide coding education to high school students, our goal is to inspire these students to pursue a college education and career in the field of IT. The projected result is an increased average income in the community as these students take jobs in the IT sector. I will expand on how Code to Career Saint Louis plans to make our goal possible in the next section.

Feasibility

The goal Code of Career Saint Louis is optimistic but certainly feasible.

In order to achieve the goal of raising the number of students who pursue post-secondary education and careers in IT, the following must occur:

  • Code to Career Saint Louis must expand our workforce by hiring 10 individuals who have experience with coding.
    • I will be prioritizing the hiring of individuals with disabilities to provide a job opportunity to individuals who may struggle to find employment elsewhere.
  • Code to Career Saint Louis will need to coordinate with the Normandy School District in order to integrate our services into the high school in a manner that will not disrupt the quality of education the students receive from their scheduled classes.
    • I will set-up workshops that will take place during the students’ study hall period. An after-school opportunity will be provided as well.
  • Code to Career Saint Louis will need to work with local IT companies and universities in order to provide networking opportunities for students interested in pursuing a career in IT.
    • World Wide Technology as well as Maryville University will be assisting our operations by providing a point-of-contact for students.

Conclusion

Code to Career Saint Louis is providing a service that no other non-profit organization in the Saint Louis area can top. With your help, we can give these students an opportunity to become the face of Saint Louis’s IT sector.
