Female Inmates Are More Complex to Be Managed, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 329

Essay

Catherine Wales, known for her repeated imprisonment, was a drug addict associated with several domestic violence casesthat landed her in jail. Wales was first sentenced for one year for causing harm to her husband due to the influence of drugs. At the prison, she seemed worse than in the society. She was involved in several fights with other women in the prison which made the prison management to isolate her until her term expired. She would still find herself in one prison, or another for domestic offences. It took time before she changed and declared fit for the society.

Catherine is just an example portraying a picture of a female prisoner. Female prisoners are said to be more difficult to be contained than men. In trying to find out about this occurrence, it would be wise to consider what factors contribute to the imprisonment of women. Most female inmates are said to be serving drug and violence offences. Before their sentence, women are said to have used drugs more frequently. Most inmates are found to have suffered sexual abuse in their childhood and several incidences of sexual abuse are reported in female prisons. These factors seem to affect the behavior of female inmates making it difficult to control them.

In the prisons, the women are said to be forming up pseudo families and sexual liaisons. The pseudo families seem to provide emotional and social support. This compactness causes trouble in organizing the female inmates since they ignore the authorities. Sexual liaisons promote sexual abuses since lesbianism goes at its peak. Being with a drug addiction history combined with the other factors makes a female inmate difficult to control. Violence breaks out easily because women are also outspoken, and this raises temper.

Problems in female prisons could also be contributed by lack of social or family contact. Female prisoners can be depressed especially if they had kids to take care of. More time needs to be added for family interactions in women prisons.
