In the age of the Internet and digital communication, the possibilities and opportunities for business and organizations to operate internationally and transnationally have grown exponentially. The process of globalization does not just affect organizations that operate on an international scale; in an increasingly-multicultural society it is necessary to consider how culture affects the processes of carrying out a project no matter the location or scale. For managers operating internationally, however, it is especially important to consider the beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors of other societies, and to develop management techniques and plans that are designed to function in the relevant cultural contexts.

This ideal is helpful to consider in any interactions. Whether dealing and interacting with friends, neighbors, or work colleagues, these interactions will inevitably include individuals from different cultural backgrounds. The more one knows about the culture of those with whom he or she interacts, the easier it will be to foster effective communications. Different cultures have different expectations and behaviors associated with work, social interaction, and other aspects of daily life, and managers who attempt to operate in other cultural contexts without understanding those contexts are setting themselves up for failure, or at least for delay. Developing knowledge of other cultures is becoming a social capital that has great value in the workplace, and this social capital is especially valuable for managers and others who are operating on an international scale.
