From Battlefield to Battlespace, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 263

Essay

The idea that the term “battlespace” is replacing “battlefield” is interesting because of its implications for wider and more flexible combat areas. The fact that the size of a battlespace can increase simply through a commander’s conceptualization of an area is incredible. It shows the immense power one person’s mind can have in warfare. The idea that battles are likely to be fought inside of cities rather than in fields rings true. Furthermore, the stipulation that information wars and satellite technology are likely to change the nature of future battles seems plausible as the world’s technology improves and advances.

The sections in this lesson that deal with space and warfare are interesting, both because of their present uses and their potential for future implementation. The use of satellite technology, for instance, is intriguing. Another interesting idea in this lesson was the idea that warfare might begin to be waged through Trojan horses and viruses rather than guns and traditional weaponry. Although it is easy to see how information wars might be devastating to a company or an individual, the damage caused by these things seems minimal when compared to some of the aftereffects of nuclear war.

Perhaps the most interesting thing about the lesson was its mention of the fact that private entities might begin to have as much power as the state when engaging in cyber warfare. This has positive implications for individuals worried about states wielding too much power over them, but rather worrisome implications for the state and for international stability. When anyone can wield power, then everyone is at some risk.
