Introduction

There are a number of purposes served by the medical records, such as the examination history, the treatment and the diagnosis of the patient. In any of the disciplinary issues, the records can be used for a certain treatment (Swap, 2005).

The Time Medical Facilities Required to Keep Medical Records

The time the medical facilities are required to keep the records depends on the type of the medical records, the reasons behind their disposition and the impending use. But in most cases it is advisable to keep the records for 12 years after the last visit or treatment of the patient.

The Importance of Keeping the Health Records

  • The health care record holds the information which is very important. The information might indicate whether a person is suffering from the allergies or not.
  • It gives a better explanation concerning the health of an individual when it comes to facing a doctor.
  • It keeps the important issues that may be required when filing the claims concerning the insurance health.

The Information That Must Be Kept in the Record

The records should contain the medical history of the family and personal, any other food and medication allergies, the insurance medical policies, preventative medical records and the list of the medication an individual is taking.  With the current technology, it is advisable for the doctors and the patients to store their records in a computerized database (Swap, 2005). This is to enable the retrieval to be easy and to avoid any document to be tampered with by either the children or any other person against your needs.

The Advantages of Following the Steps

The records can indicate the rendered services when it comes to the side of reimbursement and the utilization disputes. They are also used as evidence that concerns the provider at whatever time a mismanagement claim comes out regarding the patient care. In today’s life, each person has a right to manage his or her health care in corporation with their major care physicians, since staying under health is much important than disturbing a doctor when you are injured or sick (Skyrme, 2002).
