Leadership in management and strategic planning

Core elements to consider as essential when shaping an ideal service environment as a healthcare leader, include the target population, number of other health care competitors in the market, location of the service as well as costs involved in implementing the service . If these elements are not carefully researched the interventions could be a failure even before they begin. One example of not considering the mentioned element is if the target population is unresponsive due to system barriers. If clients have to access the service through insurance coverage and they are uninsured goals cannot be accomplished.

Thecurrent environment could be evaluated for required improvements through a system analysis.  A system analysis assesses how the current organization functions to achieve goals and make recommendations for improvement where necessary. For example, if the system analysis finds that nurse patient ratios are responsible for increases in wound infections, this will be identified and recommendations for improvements made (Whitten, Bentley & Dittman, 2005).             .

A strategic planning process is very supportive in any manager’s ability to create that ideal service environment because it is an extension to a first stage developmental plan. When the basic planning structures have been designed techiques must be created supportive of the basic plan to know how managers will implement the basic plan which was designed. For example, in the basic plan design constructing two new surgical units in the hospital was written. Strategic planning outlines details inclusive of the time when construction will begin, how funds will be obtained for the project and contractors to the used among many other features not covered in the master plan (Michael &Kaye, 2005).
