Fury Over Sex Offenders Freedom, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 291

Essay

Recently the bodies of two California teenage girls were found, Chelsea King and Amber Dubois.  The suspect in both the murders is a convicted child molester named John Albert Gardner III.

Gardner was free after an serving a 5 year sentence, and 3 years on parole,  for molesting, beating and falesly imprisoning a 13-year-old-girl in 2000.  The people of California want to know why someone with a record like Gardner´s was not being monitered after his release.  In fact, supposidly he was being monitered by the State Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, but was allowed to remain free after violating his parole by moving too close to a school.

Compounding this issue is the fact that his “field file” was destroyed by corrections officials under an official policy that records be destroyed one year after a prisoners release.  The writer of this article makes it clear he does not buy this story.  It has the smell of a cover-up.

It seems apparent that most people are in favor of harder sentences for sex offenders, especially those that involve children in their sick crimes.  However, as is the law is leanent, and the offenders get released only to commit another crime.

Since this article is an opinion, the author states he feels that sex offenders should be put away for a long time, or face the death penalty, dependingon the crime.  A recent survey conducted by Peoples Press indicated that 3 out of 10 had heard this story.  42% of those surveyed said they had heard a little about the story, while 28% had heard nothing at all.  It seems like there needs to be more news coverage of stories like this one.  If enough people were outraged enough, maybe the laws would be made tougher.
