This research was carried out with a purpose of analyzing the current situation on gangs from the state of New Jersey. This research indicates that, many New Jerseyans tend to associate youth violence with gangs and urban areas. Hence have a perception that ‘gang threat’ is primarily in urban areas and that gangs are someone else’s problem. This perception could potentially reduce public support for anti-gang initiatives.
The perceptions that gang activities are limited to New Jersey’s cities has been a big set back to innovative policies which are being formulated to mitigate spread of gang culture and have a long term effect on its spread. Cluster Sampling was the method used to select the participants in this study. It was also used to collect representative data of the whole population within the state of New Jersey. The findings from survey questionnaires can then be generalized to the larger population the sample is supposed to represent.

Other information was collected from parents, students, teachers, social agencies and other members of the public. Secondary data was collected from textbooks, journals, magazines, internet, newspapers and other researches.
Data Analysis Procedures
Data analysis was done with the aid of descriptive statistics which included the use of frequencies and percentages. Similar responses from questionnaires and Interviews from all of the respondents were tallied against their corresponding alternatives to compare the out come. Percentages were calculated, interpreted and discussed. Tables of frequency distribution, pie charts and graphs were used to show the different patterns of data categories.
