Gender Matters to a Life Experience, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 308

Essay

Men and women typically have day to day experiences that are significantly different. In the morning, women are more focused on their physical appearance and may spend time doing their hair and makeup. Depending on the career path of the woman, she may select her clothing in a manner that demonstrates professionalism in her field. Failure to do so many mean that she is not portrayed the way she intends to be, which may be detrimental to how others see her. On the other hand, a man would spend less time getting dressed. Since many men have short hair, there would not be a need to spend an excessive amount of time to get ready. While a man with a professional career would be more likely to dress up to go into work, he would be less likely to be scorned for failing to do so. Ultimately, the morning routine followed by the typical man and the typical woman is different because of the value that society places upon their physical appearances. Women are expected to look a certain way, while this is less true for men.

If a man were to take the same care that women typically do when they get ready in the morning, people would call him metrosexual or think that he is gay. Just the same, if a woman were to put in the lack of care into her morning routine that a man does, society would think that she is either a lesbian or that there is something wrong with her. It is clear that society has established a double standard for each gender, which supports an unfortunate belief that gender roles should be set in stone and strictly followed. It is necessary for us to become more accepting of humanity as a whole so that we can shift away from this bias.
