Genetically Modified and Organic Food, Essay Example

Studies and modern trends are based on the conventional methods of food production through the genetically modified organisms (GMO) or food. Organic food in this case is the food products that are adopted in agriculture using organic sources like manure instead of chemical fertilizers.

There is no use of chemical products in organic production like, pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers. Organic food differs from the organic by the processes and materials used in the production process, nutrient content, and yield levels. They differ in modes of production and practices in their farms but only have a common strive of enhancing high yields. There are differences in nutritional elements, for example, in tomatoes; level of vitamin C is high in organic tomatoes than in GMO tomatoes. Most organic food cost higher than GMO food because of the nutritional contents and perceived health effects of the GMO food. Through the development of a new strategy of climate-food labeling, it will be easy for consumers to identify organic food from the GMO.

There has been continued pollution of environment in terrestrial, aquatic, and atmospheric sections by the human activities like industrial and agricultural practices. In hydrological cycle, water has been regarded as the new oil to clean up these pollutants and diverse uses in human all human activities. This is attributed to the fact that water passes through the three mediums of environment in the hydrological cycle (Strobel, 2010). These are the terrestrial, aquatic, and atmospheric segments of the environment. Hydrological cycle has created conflicts and interest by neighboring countries that emit pollutants to the atmosphere through its industrial activities such that water passes the pollutants to another country through rain. This has created issues on environmental challenges like carbon emission trading in Australia.

Hydrological system has played a key role in dividing water to different segments of the environment as rain provides water for natural ecosystems and partially agricultural activities. However, human activities have influenced the use of water through pumping for industrial use and irrigating agricultural farms. Human beings also divert water for domestic use and industrial supply. Water is essential in every segment of society and vital for all human activities (Strobel, 2010). This further gives water the ideal reference as the new oil.
